The Smuggler's Den
Consejo Village, Corozal District
Hotel Description
Nestled along a quiet stretch of beach between Cheutmal and Corozal stands the Smuggler's Den. The fully-tiled, thatched bungalow units fitted with kitchenette, bathroom, wicker furniture, cable TV, and bedroom are set against a backdrop of tropical trees and provide panoramic views of Chetumal and the Corozal Bay. Options for on-site recreation include a small library, volleyball court, nature trails and a pool table on the second floor of the mahogany floored, thatched restaurant. The property has nature trails, unexcavated Mayan ruins and frequent wildlife sightings.
History & Owners It was luck in the throw of a dart onto a sergeant's wall and then the toss of a coin that landed Ray Wagner in Belize over twenty years ago. In those days it was "Indiana Jones" country, full of adventure, and he decided to stay. In 1998 he opened the Smuggler's Den which received its name from the historical significance of the area, known in the days of the mahogany trade as "Smuggler's Savanna". Ray and his family built everything from their hands through thick and thin, feast and famine, storm and sunshine. They live on-site and are all actively involved in running the accommodations.
