Sun Creek Lodge
Punta Gorda, Toledo District
Hotel Description
A blend of traditional and creative ways of rustic living in the tropics combined with modern conveniences welcomes guests this ?Naturalist?s Paradise.? Round, thatched cabanas are dotted throughout this ?Garden of Eden,? far enough apart that there is privacy. The spacious cabanas, made of hardwood walls and traditional thatch, are elegantly furnished with hardwood furniture, lots of windows (complete with screens and curtains) and colorful linens. The owners love to do things differently and even the outdoor showers have plants adorning them, making guests feel like they are showering in a waterfall in the jungle. It is an ideal place to stay inside and relax or to make as a home base to further explore the many "jewels" of Toledo District (or Belize).
History & Owners The Lodge was completed in 2001 but Hurricane Iris came and wiped out the property the day before they officially opened. While many people would have given up, Melissa and Bruno Kuppinger continued to pursue their dream and have since rebuilt the accommodation which opened in 2004. The Lodge got it?s name from the combination of the hot and dry sun and the creek that runs through the property, thus making it Sun Creek Lodge. Melissa, who is Belizean, loves flowering tropical plants and has incorporated her love of gardening into the landscape of the property. Bruno, originally from Germany, has a love for both business and the outdoors. Running the lodge and tours gives both Bruno and Melissa the opportunity to balance their creativity, hospitality, personal interests and formal training into one of the top accommodations off-the-beaten path.

Location & Directions 12 Miles, San Antonio Road, Punta Gorda The Lodge is located at Mile 14 on the Southern Highway about 2 miles from the junction known as ?Dump?. Look for the red signs for ?Sun Creek? posted on the highway. Coming from PG, turn right onto the dirt road and take the first left, less than 1/4 mile off of the Southern Highway. (If you start to see thatched houses and cross a bridge you have gone too far). From this turn, the Lodge is located on the left about 1/8 mile ahead. When you see a neat, thatched-roof house with lots of tropical plants outside, you have arrived at the owner?s house! It?s also easy to get here by taking any bus going to or coming from Punta Gorda Town. From the highway, the lodge is less than a five minute walk.
Local Flavor
Music, Art & Interesting People: Melissa Kuppinger Interesting Person - Renowned Cook
In addition to hosting guests at the lodge, Melissa 'invents' and adapts recipes using local ingredients. She substitutes plantains for regular bananas resulting in an equally-great treat!
