Ruthie's Cabanas
Dangriga Town, Stann Creek
Hotel Description
Ruthie?s Cabanas offers authentic Garifuna hospitality along with the
privacy of your own beachside cabana. The simple cabanas each have their
own private bathroom, veranda, fan, and TV and can sleep from 1 to 4
persons. Behind the name and the cabanas is the energetic owner, Ruthie,
who welcomes guests by saying ?My home is your home!? Her openness and
hospitality can make staying here more like a homestay than just a hotel
rental, or if you need quiet and space to relax, the place is ideal for
that too. Guests can enjoy meals at her kitchen table and get a feeling
for what living in a Garifuna home is like.
History & Owners Ruthie decided to open the cabanas in 2001 and with the help of her
husband, Meeto they constructed the thatch cabanas from mostly local
materials. Ruthie has a huge, unforgettable smile and laugh that
welcomes her guests with Garifuna hospitality and makes them feel like
family. She is a great cook who loves traditional Garifuna foods,
especially hudut (fish cooked in coconut milk and served with beaten
green plantains), which she makes every Saturday. Her coconut bread and
rolls make a delicious breakfast and you can be sure that you will not go
hungry when you stay here! Ruthie stays busy by cooking, doing laundry,
hopping onto her bicycle to do errands and keeping the cabanas and her
household running. Meeto builds boats, loves to fish and taking people
on tours. They have several children, some at home and some with their
own families, who often stop by making this household a hub of
activity.
