History & Owners Louise Aguilar, hailing 18 miles away from Belize City, spent her
childhood vacations visiting family who lived on Caye Caulker. In the
late 1980?s she bought property and decided to open a hotel in 2003 when
she retired from working at a law firm in the City. She chuckles and
says that she traded in her high heels for bare feet and a vehicle for
her bicycle. Louise is active in the community through teaching an
aerobics class and running the accommodation. She also loves the
Carnival Celebrations during September and she has stories of her
participation in several of the parades. The name Maxhapan, pronounced
?Ma-sa-pan? means ?breadfruit? originating from the three large
breadfruit trees that can be found on the property. They bear tasty
fruits three times a year which can be baked, fried or steamed. The
breadfruit tree is not indigenous to the Caribbean area. It is noted that
sailors first brought the tree to the Caribbean area in the 18th century
from the Hawaiian islands.
