History & Owners The hotel was opened by Jean Shaw Weir who had a dream of opening a hotel. She and her husband, Tom Shaw, opened it together and kept changing it over the years. The name was given by previous owner Tom Shaw. He said they wanted to use the word Regent but thought it would sound too colonial. He then learned about the Mopan Maya who were undefeated by the British and thought it would be fitting. Jean eventually bought the hotel from Tom and later left it for her children, Jeannie and Tomy, who completely changed the face of Hotel Mopan while maintaining the family atmosphere which characterizes the hotel.
