Hickatee Cottages
Punta Gorda Town, Toledo District
Hotel Description
Hickatee Cottages are built and run with love. The Caribbean-style cottages and restaurant are in a jungle setting, rich with wildlife and just one mile from Punta Gorda Town. Each spacious cottage is immaculately furnished with locally made hardwood furniture, ceiling fans, and has both a double and single bed, with en-suite bathroom facilities. The adjoining sitting area or the private veranda allow guests to enjoy the tropical gardens and view the wildlife.
Ian and Kate, the owners, have carved this little haven out of the wilderness while at the same time preserving it. Their love of gardening, nature, entertaining and people is evidenced everywhere--from the handmade soft furnishings and scrumptious meals to the well-planned areas for socializing and careful use of the land. Hickatee is ideal for exploring and relaxing or to use as a great base for day trips to explore the Toledo District.
History & Owners Hickatee Cottages is the fulfilment of a long-standing dream for Ian and Kate Morton. They discovered Belize after they first met in San Francisco in 1991 at the start of a six-week 'Green Tortoise' bus journey through Mexico. When Ian asked Kate at the end of that journey if she'd like to go to Belize with him she asked, "What's Belize?"
Thirteen years later, as the British rat-race and the thrill of jobs in social housing management and financial services marketing lost their appeal and they, yet again, returned to Belize. They found their ideal piece of land near Punta Gorda and set about indulging their hobbies ? entertaining, socializing, good food - and their passion for gardening, and nature.
The name came about on a cold, dark, winter?s night in Britain when Ian and Kate started planning their new life in Belize. First and foremost, they wanted a distinctive Belizean name and, on hunting through Katie Stevens? ?Jungle Walk? book, were intrigued by the name ?hickatee?. Having decided that they were something between a guest house and a jungle lodge, they felt ?cottages? perfectly fitted their vision of charming, cozy rooms. The result is Hickatee Cottages, and the adjoining Hickatee Nurseries, where fruits and vegetables are grown for the meals served in Charlie?s Bar.
