Fernando's Seaside Guest House
Sarteneja Village, Corozal
Hotel Description
Fernando?s Seaside Guesthouse was named the Small Hotel of the Year for
2004 by the Belize Tourism Board for their excellent service, quality
facilities and dedication to the growing tourism industry. Just a few
steps from the Caribbean Sea guests can relax on the upper veranda and
savor the spectacular view and lush breezes of the sea. The guesthouse
offers clean, pleasantly-furnished rooms, each with a private bath. One
unique room looks like a standard large hotel room until you look 15 feet
up at the thatched roof! In addition to the excellent facility, the most
outstanding thing about the guesthouse is the remarkable family who owns
and operates this accommodation. Their warm hospitality, friendly spirit
and helpful service are the biggest asset to this property, which leaves
a lasting impression on their guests.
History & Owners Like many men in Sarteneja Village, Fernando was once a full-time
fisherman who made his living by working on a sailboat at sea for up to
10 days at a time. Back in the early 1970?s he was inspired by community
leader, Jorge Verde, who was taking visitors to the Barrier Reef on his
sailboat. Fernando has since developed a vision for holding onto the
traditional ways of life in the village and offering that in a
sustainable way to those who desire to learn and experience from these
ways of life. The guesthouse was started when volunteers from a
conservation group came to Sarteneja and needed accommodations. Fernando
received a grant and started the business with one room and has now
expanded to five rooms. He is an active community leader carrying on
this vision by working with several conservation groups and other local
families to help them start small bed and breakfasts out of their homes.
Fernando?s wife and 5 children all help to run the guesthouse.
